    I grew up helping my dad put flags out along the s I grew up helping my dad put flags out along the streets of our town for every patriotic holiday. Once, as we rose from the curb on Main Street during a parade, I asked him, "Dad, why do we stand up when the flag comes by?" 
He gave me the same answer I'd eventually give my young daughters when they asked that same question. "Because a lot of people died for it." 
Before I was born, Dad served in a war and came back with memories too heavy for one person to carry and a Purple Heart. But he did come back, and that's why I'm here. 
He never talked about his fellow service members who didn't come home, but I imagine he thought of them often, especially on Memorial Day. 
He wasn't one to share his feelings, but as I look back, I see that he dealt with them by helping others. "Honor the dead by serving the living," he'd say.
